Hunter College Art Galleries | Americanana Exhibition
Americanana, an exhibition at Hunter College Art Galleries, featured work by diverse artists including Jasper Johns, H.C. Westermann, and Kara Walker who engage American creative traditions, revealing changing artistic and social attitudes towards the American past. With work from the 1960s to the present, the exhibition explored what it means to claim “American”.

Our exhibition identity and catalogue were designed to evoke the eclectic and ongoing re-interpretation of Americana through a combination of modern and traditional typography and an emphasis on the singularity of every object in the show. We contrasted 19th century typography and 20th century silkscreen techniques to contrast nostalgia and critique.

The catalogue was also designed to be produced inexpensively and distributed free as a poster, signaling its craft spirit and the needs of a public university art gallery.
